Title: Effects of eye contact and gaze on infants' looking, learning and
brain activity
Abstract: Soon after birth infants are very interested in faces and
seem to pay particular attention to eyes. Why is that? In a series of
eye tracking and EEG studies we have explored how infants perceive
other persons’ eye gaze and how this affects their own brain activity,
looking behavior and their learning about novel objects. We discovered
that 4-month-old infants recognize objects that were previously cued by
another person’s eye gaze and/or head direction. This is true even if
only schematic eyes are presented as cues, but not when the objects are
cued by non-social dynamic stimuli or contrast-reversed schematic eyes.
We also explored infants’ brain activities in response to
object-directed and non-object-directed eye gaze across the first year
of life and discovered substantial age-related differences.
Furthermore, we tested how infants react to eye contact in a live joint
attention interaction and found very similar activations in
9-month-olds as in adults. The studies will be discussed in the broader
context of infant social cognitive development and learning.

Dear Cognitive Folks,
The next Fluencia Party will be on the 12th November (Thursday) starting at
8pm at Élesztő,
Tűzoltó utca 22.(close to Corvin).
Fluencia is a monthly organized informal "jamboree" for cogsci-,
psychology-related students (undergrads, grads), professors, researchers
from many different universities in Hungary. The idea and motivation is to
facilitate interactions, communication, collaboration among researchers
working here, get to know others and others' interests, topics, etc. And,
of course, to have some drinks and fun in a friendly environment.
Everybody is welcome to attend! If you have any further questions, do not
hesitate to ask.

The (Un)Refutation of Idealism
Tuesday, 17 November 2015, 5.30 PM, Zrinyi 14, Room 412
ABSTRACT
In 'The Refutation of Idealism' GE Moore famously argues that a certain
claim is both the basis for believing that 'esse is percipi' and
self-contradictory. The claim in question is the identification of the
sensation of e.g. blueness with the object of the sensation, namely
blueness - or perhaps an instance of blueness - itself. Call this
'Objectualism' about the sensation. The connection between Objectualism
and the esse is percipi thesis was noted by Berkeley (Notebooks 609),
though obviously he did not think it self-contradictory. In this paper I
first defuse Moore’s charge of self-contradiction before defending
Objectualism on two grounds: first, that if we accept the argument that
naïve realism best explains the phenomenology of perception, especially
what is called transparency, then Objectualism provides a better
explanation than other relationist forms of naïve realism; and secondly,
Objectualism avoids the most problematic forms of the hard problem of
consciousness (something Berkeley also noted at the start of the second
of the Three Dialogues). Neither Berkeley nor Moore suggest that
Objectualism alone entails that esse is percipi, but it does provide a
fertile starting point for idealism

Work in Progress
The Department of Cognitive Psychology at the Institute of Psychology of
the Eötvös Loránd University is organizing its annual student symposium, "Work
in Progress", whose main goal is to provide a forum for students in the
field of cognitive science to present their research to a wider audience of
peers as well as receive feedback on their work.
Participation is open for any student who has not yet received their PhD
degree. The topic of the presented research must be cognitive, and pilot
studies and research plans are also welcome. The presentations should be in
English. A participant can choose to present their work in Hungarian at end
of the event.
Date and time: 14th of December, 2015 (Monday), starting at 10 o'clock
Place: ELTE-PPK, Institute of Psychology, Izabella utca 46, Révész Géza
room (room 301)
The presentations should be 10 minutes long in the case of completed
studies and
5 minutes long in the case of a pilot study or a research plan. There is no
time limit for the discussion.
If you would like to participate, please send us a title and a maximum 150-word
abstract through the online registration form which can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1rG6U_Xz8lwPm_lIwmeslWu9OCUwGOOCuG-cg7ZK__s…
Deadline: 7th December, 2015 (Monday), 23:59
The final schedule of the event will be available after the deadline.
Szeretettel várunk minden érdeklődőt a Kognitív Szeminárium előadására,
amelyen
*Tauzin Tibor: A kontingens reaktivitás szerepe a kommunikáció
felismerésében csecsemőknél és kutyánál *című előadását hallgathatják meg.
Időpont és helyszín: 2015. november 26. (csütörtök), 17:30, Izabella utca
46, 301-es terem (Révész Géza terem)
A társas kontingencia, vagyis a válaszvalószínűség nagysága interaktív
helyzetben, a kommunikáció egy strukturális alapjellemzője. A kontingencia
túl, a kommunikáció tartalmának kikövetkeztetésében.

Hugo Mercier (University of Neuchatel)

Novel evidence for the argumentative theory of reasoning
The argumentative theory of reasoning suggests that the main function of human reasoning is to argue: to find arguments to convince others, and to evaluate others' arguments to be convinced when warranted. Support for this theory has come so far from reviewing work in several domains of psychology. Here I will present novel experimental evidence supporting the theory's predictions: 1) argumentative competence is universal and early developing; 2) the improvement of performance in group discussion stems from sound argumentative competence; 3) there is an asymmetry in the way people evaluate their own and other people's arguments
