Title: Children Learn Language in Interaction
Abstract: I argue that interaction is essential to children both for learning a first language and for learning how to use it. Interaction allows children to discover the forms to use, and gives them feedback on those forms for conveying particular meanings, without disrupting the ongoing exchange. I will give evidence for the role of interaction in the process of acquisition from (a) parental reformulations, (b) offers of new words, and (c) offers of information about new word meanings .

Abstract
The evolution of highly developed sociality is often cited as one of the
main behavioural characteristics that differentiate us from non-human
animals. Thus one principal aim of comparative cognition research is to
shed light to uniquely human socio-cognitive skills in contrast to those
ones that are shared with other species. Here I will briefly present the
main approaches to comparative cognition and then focus on those basic
social behaviours that are shared by humans and low-level vertebrates --
reptiles. It is a wide spread notion that reptiles are non-social
animals, although ample evidence has been gathered from field
investigations that contradicts this assumption. I will present some of
the more recent studies demonstrating that reptiles are able to follow
the gaze of a conspecific and that they spontaneously learn from a
social demonstration in various contexts including the two-action task.
These results indicate that several socio-cognitive abilities are likely
based on evolutionarily ancient mechanisms.

Subject: New Master's Program "Mind and Brain"
To: Dirk Mende <mb-education(a)hu-berlin.de>
Dear colleagues,
As of the winter semester 2013/14 (beginning 1st October 2013) the Berlin
School of Mind and Brain will be offering the English-language
interdisciplinary master's program “Mind and Brain”.
Please make suitable candidates aware of this new program! We would
appreciate your supporting us by forwarding this e-mail to interested
students, coordinators, or colleagues nationally and internationally.
The master’s program is aimed at students with a BA degree in psychology,
philosophy, neuroscience, linguistics, biology, cognitive science or
related subjects.
There is no tuition fee.
The application period is from 1st to 31st May 2013.
The structure of the master’s program allows students to choose between
three areas of specialization: (1) psychology or neuroscience, (2)
philosophy or linguistics, (3) academic management. Depending on the area
of specialization, one of two different degrees may be awarded: the first
area of specialization leads to a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree (Track
Brain), the two other areas of specialization lead to a Master of Arts
(M.A.) degree (Track Mind).
For further information, please visit our website
www.mind-and-brain.de/master or contact the program coordinator Dr Dirk
Mende, mb-education(a)hu-berlin.de, +49 30 2093-1792.
Best Regards,
Dirk Mende

Erre tán a
A variáció bizonyos
a *hotelben.*
született mind a paradigmatikus hiányról, mind a variációról különböző

The mental timeline during the processing of linguistic information
Our research demonstrates that spatial concepts are activated while
participants process time-related information in sentences.
Specifically, processing of temporal sentence information produces a
space-time congruency effect on reaction time for responses arranged on
the left-right axis and also for responses that consist of movements
along the back-front axis. These findings are consistent with the view
that time runs from left to right or from back to front. However, the
results of our experiments indicate that these spatial concepts become
only activated during the processing of sentences when time is a
task-relevant dimension but not when time is task-irrelevant. According
to this pattern of results, we have concluded that spatial concepts are
not always required for the processing of temporal sentence information.
In more general terms, these results cast doubt on the prevailing
assumption within the framework of grounded cognition that linguistic
processes need to tap sensory and motor processes in order to enable
natural language understanding.
We're looking forward to see you there (Frankel Leo u. 30-34) !
