The next talk in the CDC Seminar series will be given by: Birgit Träuble (Heidelberg University) Date: Wednesday, March 13, 2013, 5 PM Location: Cognitive Development Center, Hattyú u. 14, 3rd floor Title: The role of functional and causal information in infant cognition Abstract: Research on the early conceptualization of objects suggests that knowledge about causal and functional properties plays a crucial role already in infancy. This becomes apparent in a variety of early cognitive abilities. The first part of the talk focuses on infants’ sensitivity to causal and functional information when classifying unfamiliar objects (object categorization) and determining the number of objects involved in a given event (object individuation). The focus of the second part of the talk will be on infants’ attention to function information within a social communication context. As suggested by natural pedagogy theory (Csibra & Gergely 2006, 2009), infants are biased to interpret ostensive-referential communication as conveying kind-relevant and generalizable information. In a series of experiments we examined what type of information would be taken as kind-relevant and transferred to others when different types of information (color and function) are provided. Main findings suggest that within an ostensive communicative context, one-year-old infants prefer to generalize function information over color information if they are forced to choose. Furthermore, the special status of function information also persists in non-ostensive communicative contexts where infants show person-centered interpretations of the given event. The meaning of the results for natural pedagogy theory in particular as well as for early conceptual development in general will be discussed, future research will be outlined. (hétfő) 16:00 1990-ben a régi Akadémiai Kiadó közrebocsátásban megjelent egy kis terjedelmű, ám annál jelentősebb munka, Réger Zita: *Utak a nyelvhez *c. könyve. Ebben egyebek között saját cigány nyelvi kutatásainak jelentős részét is közreadta. Ez a könyvecske, valamint a posztumusz közzétett *Cigány gyermekvilág *c. kötet ma már több egyetemen és főiskolán kötelező tananyag, amelyek elektronikusan is hozzáférhetőek. Réger Zita hazai viszonylatban azon kevesek közé tartozott, akik kutatásaikban már a 70-80-as években összhangba kerültek a kortárs nemzetközi antropológiailag, etnográfiailag megalapozott társas szemléletű nyelvészettel, sőt tovább is lépett. A nyelvi szocializáció jelenségét, a beszélés etnográfiája dimenziójában vizsgálta, és e tekintetben óriási empirikus anyagot gyűjtést végzett. A kutatási alapegység itt nem az egyes beszélő egyén, hanem az anya (gondozó) és csecsemő olyan *duáluniója, *ahol nincs értelme a további felbontásnak, s a baba elsődlegesen ezen az alapegységen keresztül kapcsolódik a többi beszélőhöz, az anyanyelvi közösséghez. Az anyák, amikor gyermekeik nyelvi megnyilvánulásait kanalizálni, illetve fokozatosan bővíteni igyekeznek, akkor nem csak a közösség által elvárt, korrekt fonetikai és alaktani megformáláshoz nyújtanak mintát, hanem egyben az emberi érintkezés kulturálisan meghatározott, rejtett szabályaiba is bevezetik a gyermekeiket. Az* Utak a nyelvhez *címben jelzett többes szám arra utal, hogy ezeknek a rejtett szabályoknak a spontán követését magát is kultúránként eltérő, sőt többnyire szociálisan is rétegzett, de típusokba rendezhető modellek irányítják, s ezek a gyermeket gondozó számára is meglehetősen szigorú, ám implicit szabályok a közösségre jellemző együttélési normákba ágyazódnak. Az eltérő anyanyelvátadási stratégiák elég nagy különbséget is jelentenek ahhoz, hogy már az iskolai oktatás során előnnyel vagy hátránnyal járjanak a gyerek számára, s így hosszú távra kijelöljék majdani helyét az adott társadalomban. CALL FOR PAPERS FOR A SYMPOSIUM/SESSION TO BE HELD AT THE 32nd ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE EUROPEAN SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF THE HUMAN SCIENCES (University of Würzburg, Germany, July 30-August 2, 2013) THE BEHAVIORIST MANIFESTO (1913): THE FIRST REACTIONS OUTSIDE THE USA ORGANIZED BY CSABA PLÉH & ANNETTE MÜLBERGER Exactly a hundred years ago, John Broadus Watson published his article "Psychology as the Behaviorist views it". Its first paragraph is one of the most cited texts, marking the beginning of the behaviorist era in the United States. It entails radical statements aimed at a fundamental break with introspection as method and consciousness as object of research. Influenced by North American functionalism, Watson tried to lead psychology away from philosophy and the German experimental tradition, towards a project of a science of behavior, understood as conditioned reflex. Historical research has shown to what extend a generalized dissatisfaction with contemporary psychological research prepared the terrain and how Watson's social status helped him to gain acceptance for his proposal among his fellow psychologists. What is still missing is an assessment of the historical development of his broader influence and the critical reactions voiced from abroad. When did the news about the new behaviorist wave in psychology reach other psychological communities outside the United States? What were the early reactions, and what arguments for and against behaviorism did they contain? How was behaviorism appropriated in other local contexts? The years after the publication of the manifesto are crucial, because after the World War I Germany would lose its scientific hegemony gradually, while the USA gained relevance. It is highly probable that Germany's political defeat paved the way for an increased influence of behaviorism, viewed at that time as a "typical North American" kind of psychology.
