Should Marital Relations be Non-Hierarchical?
Issues in Distributive Justice and Love
5.10 PM, Tuesday, 19 February 2008, Gellner room (9. Nádor str. 1st floor)
ABSTRACT
The paper examines whether there is a justification for an egalitarian norm widely accepted today, which I call the Marital Non-Hierarchy Standard (MNHS). According to this standard, marital relationships should be non-hierarchical; neither partner may be more dominant than the other. If I want to spend our vacation on the hillside, and you prefer the beach, we should find an alternative that satisfies us both equally. The MNHS is exceptional: hierarchies are widely believed to be morally legitimate, within certain limits, in almost all associations, including many financial, professional, educational and recreational ones, in almost all spheres of life.
How might the MNHS be justified? It might be suggested that marital relations should be based on love, and love requires that lovers will have the same degree of power. However, philosophical analyses of love by, e.g., Solomon, Fisher, Kolodny, Soble or Newton-Smith, which present various characteristics as essential or typical of love, do not show that love excludes hierarchy. One can value one's partner, promote her interests, be attracted, committed, or dedicated to her, etc. while having unequal power to the loved one. Common experience, and the comparison of marital love to other types of love (e.g., parental, filial), also suggest that love does not exclude hierarchy.
It might also be suggested that justice requires that lovers will have equal power. However, theories of distributive justice such as Rawls's, Sen's, Dworkin's, Miller's, Nozick's, and almost all others do not justify the MNHS, because they stipulate proportional equality while the MNHS stipulates strict equality in actual power.
Thus, both the "love requirement" and almost all theories of distributive justice do not show that it is morally wrong to have non-MNHS relationships. Until other justifications of the MNHS are presented, it is unclear why it should be accepted.

Munka- és kutatási lehetőség:
eye-tracking / szemmozgás-regisztrációs
vizsgálatok technikai menedzselése
Az
EU 7-es keretprogramjában (ezen belül: Accessible and Inclusive Information and
Communication Technology) a
A
feladat elsősorban az eye-tracking berendezés beszerzésével, működésbe
állításával és működtetésével kapcsolatos technikai feladatok megoldása,
beleértve a mérésekhez kapcsolódó programozási és adatfeldolgozási feladatokat
is.
Bérezés:
mind formáját (megbízás, vállalkozás, etc.), mind nagyságát illetően megegyezés
szerint, a ráfordított munkaidő arányában.
A
kutatás a pályázat elfogadása esetén 2008. április 1-jével indul, 3 év
futamidővel. A futamidő alatt a szemmozgásregisztrációs vizsgálatok
folyamatosan történnek, de – a kutatási tervnek megfelelően – változó
intenzitással.
Mivel
a vizsgálatok autizmussal élő serdülőkön és felnőtteken folynak majd, az
autizmus (illetve általában a neurokognitív fejlődési zavarok) iránti
érdeklődés előny, de nem feltétel. A téma iránt érdeklődő jelentkezőnek a labor
szabad kapacitásán belül kutatási lehetőséget is biztosítunk.
A
vizsgálatok az Autizmus Alapítvány és az ELTE Kognitív Pszichológia Tanszék
együttműködésében történnek.

EASA Conference 2008 Experiencing diversity and mutuality
Rethinking spirit possession
(W094)
Spirit possession is an extreme way of knowing the 'other' by
embodying it; the kind of 'first-hand' religious experience, in
William James' terms, which still provokes great interest among
anthropologists. While in some societies spirit possession and trance
have been considered as favorite means of expression for marginalized
and oppressed, in others, cultivated by religious experts, they form
the core of the local religion. In spite of the variety of possession
cults and practices around the world there are strong similarities in
the possession experience. In this panel we intend to bring together
cases of spirit possession from various religious traditions, from
Christianity to Brazilian Candomblé, in search of its underlying
characteristics. Our interest is to explore the processes through
which this human experience becomes religious or dissociative
(disorder), as negotiated between cultural frames and individual
insight. For this, we will focus on processes of 'learning possession'
and the successful transmission of representations related to spirit
possession. Although much has been written about it, few
anthropologists addressed possession as a mode of knowledge or a mode
of attending to the world. In this panel we intend to pursue this
direction further in the light of recent research in cognitive
sciences. We are interested, among others, in the role of cognition
and imagination in creating an experience of dissociation and in the
role of emotions as somatic markers for 'recognizing' possession.
The call for papers opens between January 20, 2008 and March 31, 2008.
The abstracts of the papers should be submitted via online form linked
to each workshop page (not sent by email). For more details you can
