Dear Colleague:
Could you cast a glance at the

Thanks in advance,

Call for papers
One-day conference in Budapest on
THE SOCIAL SCIENCE OF MOBILE LEARNING, Friday November 29, 2002
Organized by the Institute for Philosophical Research of the Hungarian
Academy of Sciences and WESTEL Mobile Telecommunications (Hungary).
Handheld devices are emerging as one of the most promising technologies for
supporting learning and particularly collaborative learning scenarios;
mainly because they offer new opportunities for individuals who require
mobile computer solutions that other devices can not provide. Recently, a
considerable number of researchers claim that mobile computing can
potentially enable students to share information, coordinate their tasks
and, more broadly, function effectively in collaborative settings. The
major challenge is not simply to provide novel mobile and wireless
computational tools, but rather to explore new and varied educational
activities that become available while applying innovative approaches for
designing a new kind of educational technologies.
The aim of this one-day conference is to bring together educational
researchers, social scientists and technologists in order to discuss the
impact of these new technologies in education and their implications for
the future of learning.
The topics of interest related to the conference theme include but are not
limited to:
* M-learning and educational theory
* The cognitive psychology of m-learning
* The construction of meaning in mobile discourse
* Ubiquitous computing and integrated learning environment
* Pilot m-learning projects
Abstracts (350 to 700 words) should be submitted to Kristóf Nyíri
<nyiri(a)phil-inst.hu>.
Important dates:
September 30, 2002 Deadline for applications and the submitting of
abstracts
October 15, 2002 Notification of participation
Keynote Speaker: Marcelo Milrad, School of Mathematics and Systems
Engineering Växjö University, Sweden.
Registration fee: $ 50. This includes refreshments, coffee and sandwiches,
and an evening wine and cheese party. Participants will receive the
published version of the proceedings of the conference, which will appear
by January 2003.

EDITORIAL
IDA on Will: Its no Illusion
- by Stan Franklin
"The issue of free will is perhaps the most oft debated single issue in the
history of philosophy. Whether philosophers or scientists, most modern
materialists, believe the universe, at scales beyond the quantum, is
deterministic. This leads them to class free will with magic. Its only an
illusion."
Counter to this notion, Professor Franklin here argues that free will is
indeed more than an illusion. Drawing upon evidence from both artificial
intelligence and neurophysiology, Franklin makes a valid case against what
he sees as a "magical free will" notion.

ABOUT SCIENCE & CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
SCR is a community-building effort. Many scientific communities study how
the human brain makes possible perception, memory, and even attention. But
for historical reasons, we have no scientific community for exploring
consciousness --- including our own experiences of the world, of each other
and of ourselves. It is probably the most important neglected topic in
science.
Students and scientists all over the world are vitally interested. Hardly a
week goes by without another major article in headline journals like Science
and Nature. The flow of evidence has increased enormously. But so far we
have few institutional resources for teaching, learning, and sharing this
information.
In the last decade we have seen new, high quality journals, professional
societies, and regular meetings. They are vitally important.
But many people feel that we need an international forum to build a sense of
shared community. SCR is an effort in that direction.

+--------------------------------------------------------------+
The Fourth International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Modeling
and
Using Context, will provide a high-quality forum for discussions
about context among researchers active in artificial intelligence and
other
areas of computer science, cognitive science, linguistics, the
organizational
sciences, philosophy, and psychology.
Context affects a wide range of activities in humans and animals as
well as
in artificial agents and other computer programs. The importance of
context
is widely acknowledged, and "context" has become an area of study in
its own
right, as evidenced by the numerous workshops, symposia, seminars, and
conferences held recently. CONTEXT, the oldest conference series
focusing on
context, is unique due to its strong emphasis on interdisciplinary
research. Previous CONTEXT conferences have been held in Rio de
Janeiro,
Brazil (CONTEXT'97), Trento, Italy (CONTEXT'99), and Dundee, Scotland
(CONTEXT'01). Each of these brought together researchers in many
disparate
fields to discuss and report on research on context-related topics.
The proceedings of CONTEXT'03 will be published in a Lecture Notes
series
(http://www.springer.de/comp/lnai) of Springer-Verlag, as were those of
previous CONTEXT conferences.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
To guide potential submissions, a representative sampling of topics of
interest for CONTEXT'03 are as follows (in alphabetical order). This is
not
an exhaustive list, and other contributions are welcome, although all
submissions must have a focus on context.
Analogy and Case-based Reasoning Autonomous Agents and Agent-based
Systems
Cognitive Modeling Commonsense Reasoning
Context Issues in Databases Context-aware Applications
Contextual Effects on Language Contextual Effects on
Problem-solving,
Understanding and Production Decision-making, and

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
Since CONTEXT'03 will be an interdisciplinary forum, all submissions,
in
addition to being evaluated for their technical merit, will be
evaluated for
their accessibility to an interdisciplinary audience. Works that
transcend
disciplinary boundaries are especially encouraged. Papers will be
accepted
either for oral presentation or for presentation at a poster session.
Each submission will be evaluated by three referees. Complete
formatting
requirements and detailed instructions for authors can be found on the
conference Web page. Note that papers cannot be longer than 14 pages.
Papers
must be submitted electronically--no hardcopy submissions will be
accepted
without prior approval from the Program Co-Chairs well in advance of
the
submission deadline. LaTeX and Word templates are available at the
conference
Web page. Papers must be in PDF format. See the conference Web page
for
instructions on converting to this format from Word, LaTeX, etc.
Submitted papers should be received by the Program Co-Chairs no later
than
January 6, 2003. The conference Web page contains instructions for
submitting
papers electronically.
