Here is a brief description of the course:
Chomskyan models and Psycholinguistics
In this course I will discuss various "stages" within the generative
enterprise. We will start with the early approach of the 60ies, i.e. a
transformational, rule-oriented approach to syntatic theory. Taking this
as a starting point, we will see how the theory developed into a
"principles and parameters" -based approah (i.e what is generally referred
to as the "Government and Binding" framework). Finally I will discuss
current developments within the theory of Grammer, namely the so calle
Minimalist framework.
In discussing the major assumptions of these models we will also discuss
various implications the differente approaches have for issues in
Psycholinguistics as well as within the "philosophy of mind".
-What do the different approaches have to say concerning the learnability
problem (i.e. language acquisition)?
-What do the different approaches imply for parsing theories?
What do the different approaches have to say concerning the organization
of Grammar, the organization of the language faculty, and ultimately the
organization of the human mind. I.e. we will specifically discuss the
"Autonomy Hypothesis" and "Modularity of Mind" with respect to each of the
proposed models.
