Title: Knowing where we are: decoding spatial representations in the human brain
Abstract: Despite the extensive knowledge about the cellular constituents of spatial cognition, our understanding of how neurons encode our location in space is very incomplete. Since most of the research is done on rodents, it is important to compare those results to human data. In this lecture, I will overview our studies on human spatial awareness and discuss the possible underlying neuronal code used by the population of neurons in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. Based on recordings of place cells and grid cells from the human medial temporal lobe, I highlight a few contradictions that challenge our effort to integrate human data with animal models of spatial encoding.
