Title: Babies learning which words?

Abstract:

How do babies learn words? We usually study this by surveying vocabulary knowledge and then doing laboratory experiments to test hypotheses about why the surveys show what they do. I will give examples of this path to discovery and will argue that it’s not enough, and I will try to make the case that measuring children’s environments better is a part of the solution.
