Title: Age-related changes in the auditory processing and in the balance between attention and distraction

Abstract: In order to interact with our environment in an adaptive way, we need to filter task-relevant events while ignore task-irrelevant ones. However, such a perfect attention set cannot be established: rare, unexpected sensory events capture our attention, in other words, we get distracted. Numerous studies suggest that this balance between attention and distraction changes during the lifespan; specifically, older adults are associated with deteriorated frontal lobe functions which result in a decreased ability to inhibit the processing of irrelevant information, leading to greater susceptibility to distraction. Moreover, aging is also characterized with declined sensory processing, further contributing to decreased performance in different tasks. My talk is going to focus on the electrophysiological correlates of the interaction between sensory processing and its top-down modulation during aging in the auditory modality. I will also discuss these processes in context of the behavioral performance, highlighting the role of compensation and motivational factors.
